West Hollywood moves to ban dog, cat sales

Monty, a 3-year-old French bulldog, and his owner Andreas Mathieu visit at William S. Hart park, an off-leash facility for dogs and their owners, in West Hollywood, Calif., Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010. This famously quirky city that formally recognizes pets as "companions" and their owners as "guardians" was set to adopt an ordinance Tuesday night, banning stores from retailing cats and dogs in a move aimed at curbing so-called puppy mills and kitty factories. Pet shops will be permitted, however, to offer animals from shelters. Officials acknowledge the new ordinance will have little bite - no pet stores in the city currently sell animals - but they're hoping it will have a lot of bark and other municipalities will follow suit. (AP Photo/Reed Saxon)The vote to ban the sale of dogs and cats in this famously liberal enclave will likely have more bark than bite, since no pet stores in the city currently sell animals.

When vets make mistakes, pets pay the price

A pathologist?s report of aggressive bone cancer turned out to be wrong for Finnegan, an 8-year-old Greyhound. Three years later, he?s happy and healthy and his owners are glad they got a second opinion, though they worry about medical errors in other people's pets. (msnbc.com)When medical errors occur in animals, owners and advocates say they're often ignored, minimized or outright denied by a system that devalues the bond between pets and their owners and fails to hold veterinarians sufficiently accountable for mistakes.
